BioAfter over three decades behind a desk, I have been granted a miraculous reprieve - a small cushion of money, benefits, and help to find my bliss, or a reasonable facsimile thereof. With freedom comes responsibility, I know, and I mustn't let the grass grow beneath my feet. I was thinking the other day that if I'd just left an abusive and stultifying marriage, I could choose to be single. Alas, that cannot pertain if you've left a stultifying and dehumanizing job - no matter how much you'd like to, you can't choose to be unemployed. The sad thing is that while there are many many things I love to do, anything I might reasonably do for a living leaves me totally cold. But the rent must be paid.
When I was young my dream was to be an opera singer. I did everything I could to sabotage myself and when the dream resurfaced when I was 54 there wasn't a lot I could do but I am not going to give up. I study, I learn arias and roles, I audition. When all else fails I produce fundraising concerts myself. The child of two atheists who took a brief detour into Unitarian Universalism, I am now a volunteer soloist and choir member at a Lutheran church.
I am caregiver to my former female domestic partner of 30 years. I sleep with a married man, who is another "well spouse".
I write fiction. One of my plays was produced in a regional theater in Texas. My dream is for someone to "discover" this blog, like in Julie and Julia. Julie wasn't the world's greatest cook, but someone found her story interesting. I am not the world's greatest singer, but my dream is for someone to read this and find me interesting so that I can make money writing about me and my experiences, go on book tours, sell the movie rights, and be a star.
